I was trying to get a photo of my necklace but my aim was wildly off. And this is the only photo I got that was even a tiny bit in focus. I guess that’s why they invented tripods. But I kinda like it anyway. Some of my favourite photos are ‘accidents’.

While searching for something to watch over the weekend I came across a series called ‘The secret lives of Mormon wives.’ From the title alone I immediately assumed that this might be some sort of hard-hitting documentary. And even though the banner image of eight immaculate, over-airbrushed women posing like they're Victoria Secrets models seemed to be a little incongruous with my interpretation of the title, I ignored this obvious red flag and proceeded to press play. As quickly as the opening sequence began, I realised that I had indeed been mistaken. This wasn’t a docuseries at all but rather it’s poor, tasteless cousin, the reality TV show. As disappointed as I was, I was also tired of searching for something to watch and, dare I say it, I was even a little intrigued. So, I gave in to my base desires, submitting to being manipulated by the manufactured drama of it all. At one point during the show, I had a moment when I suddenly stopped and thought, ‘wait …. am I somehow racist against young, beautiful white women?’ I couldn’t tell most of them apart, they all looked the same. There was the pregnant lady, the token black lady (who, shock, really doesn’t get much of a look-in at all) and then a bunch of skinny, blondish-brunetish white women with almost identical personalities. At one point, one of these women dyed her hair red and I rejoiced: ‘Ok, so now I have the red haired lady, the pregnant lady and the token black lady’. But my excitement was short-lived. As soon as she had dyed her hair red it was back to being blonde. I guess red wasn’t generic enough? But this was the least of my problems with this show. At one point I felt like screaming profanities when one of the obviously abusive men in the show tried to justify his behaviour to his partner with the line, ‘I love you. I love you too much, that’s my problem’. I think we can all agree, his abundance of love for her was not the problem. And don’t even get me started on the labiaplasty business. So, yeah, I think it’s safe to say I fully gave myself over to being manipulated and rage-baited. I really only have myself to blame.

Thank god Spring is on its way. I’m really looking forward to those 4 or 5 days in a year when I’m neither too hot to move nor too cold to get out of bed.
